[Narrator - Ethan]: "I’m going to marry this girl." That’s what I told myself every morning for the last three years. My name is Ethan, I’m 32, a Senior Project Manager in Seattle, and I’m a man who likes a plan. I like roadmaps, I like milestones, and I like knowing exactly where my life is headed.

Maya was supposed to be the destination. She was 28, a marketing genius with a smile that could sell ice to an Eskimo. We met at a gallery opening in 2021, and for me, it was game over. She was everything—smart, spontaneous, and seemingly devoted. I had spent three months’ salary on a round-cut diamond ring that was currently sitting in my pocket, burning a hole through my jeans.

It was Saturday, March 15th. The "Big Day." I had orchestrated the perfect evening: a private rooftop overlooking the Puget Sound, a string duo playing her favorite indie songs, and a sunset that I’d timed to the minute. I even had a photographer hiding behind a large potted fern.

I was standing in my apartment, adjusting my tie in the mirror, when my phone vibrated. It was Sarah, Maya’s best friend since college.

"Hey, Sarah. If you're calling to tell me Maya’s nervous, don't worry, I am too," I said, trying to keep my voice steady.

There was a long, suffocating silence on the other end. Then, Sarah’s voice came through, thin and trembling. "Ethan... do not propose to her tonight."

My heart did a slow, heavy roll in my chest. "What? Is this a joke? Sarah, the violinist is literally setting up right now."

"Check your messages," she whispered. "I’ve been sitting on this for weeks because I didn't want to ruin your life, but I realized... she’s the one doing that. I can't let you sign a legal document tethering yourself to her. Just look at the video. I'm sorry."

Click. I stood there, the silk of my tie still between my fingers. My phone chimed. A video file.

I opened it. It was recorded in a dimly lit, high-end lounge—the kind of place where the cocktails cost $25 and the lighting is designed to hide secrets. The camera was shaky, zoomed in from across the room. There was Maya. She was wearing that emerald silk dress she told me she’d bought for a "girls' night" two weeks ago.

She wasn't with girls.

She was tucked into a leather booth, draped over a man I recognized instantly from her old college photos: Julian, the "toxic ex" she claimed she hadn't spoken to in half a decade. In the video, Julian’s hand was firmly on her thigh, sliding upward. Maya wasn't pulling away. She was leaning into his ear, whispering something that made him smirk. Then, she pulled back, looked him dead in the eye, and kissed him with a hunger I hadn't seen in our own bedroom for months.

The video ended with them standing up, Julian’s arm possessively around her waist as they headed toward the exit.

I looked at the engagement ring on my dresser. The diamond caught the light, sparkling with a cruel, expensive irony. I didn't scream. I didn't throw things. My PM brain took over. I analyzed the data. The date of the video: February 28th. The night she told me she was helping Sarah through a breakup.

I picked up the ring box, snapped it shut, and put it in my jacket pocket. I wasn't going to cancel the dinner. I had paid for a show, and by God, I was going to see the final act.

But as I pulled up to the restaurant, I realized I hadn't just seen a kiss. I had seen a betrayal that went much deeper than a drunken mistake, and the way Maya greeted me at the entrance made me realize I didn't know the woman standing in front of me at all...
