Chapter 3: THE TURNING POINT AND THE TRUTH

"Tony, how could you?" my mother whispered. "Scarlet told me everything. The debt, the anger... she said she was terrified of you."

I looked at my mother, then at Scarlet, who was hiding behind her like a frightened child. This was her favorite move: the "Human Shield." She didn't have the courage to face me, so she used the people I loved as weapons.

I took a deep breath. "Mom, I have the bank statements in my bag. I have the private investigator’s report on her affair with Jason. Do you really think I’m the one lying?"

I handed my mother a folder. I didn't say a word. I watched as she flipped through the photos of Scarlet and Jason at a hotel—dated weeks before I ever left. I watched her see the credit card statements showing $15,000 spent on designer clothes while Scarlet told my family I was "struggling to provide."

My mother’s face went from pity to pure rage. She turned to Scarlet. Scarlet tried to stammer, "It’s... it’s not what it looks like, I was framed!"

"Framed?" my mother hissed. "In a hotel room in Vegas when you told me you were at a yoga retreat?"

The support system Scarlet had spent weeks building collapsed in minutes. She had alienated her own friends by trying to use them as pawns. By the time we went back into the courtroom for the final ruling, Scarlet was sitting alone. No friends. No family. Just her and her mounting legal fees.

The judge didn't hold back.

"Mrs. Brown," the judge said, peering over his glasses. "Not only is this claim for emotional distress dismissed with prejudice, but I am referring this file for potential investigation into fraudulent testimony. You have wasted this court's time with a fantasy. You will be responsible for 100% of Mr. Smith’s legal fees."

Scarlet’s jaw dropped. "But... I don't have that kind of money! Tony, tell him! We’re a team!"

I didn't even look at her. I looked at the judge and said, "Thank you, Your Honor."

Outside, Scarlet chased me to my car. She was frantic now. The designer suit was wrinkled. Her hair was a mess. The "magnetic" Scarlet was gone; only the parasite remained.

"Tony, please!" she grabbed my arm. "If I have to pay your fees, I’ll lose everything. I’ll be homeless. You don't want that on your conscience, do you? After everything we shared?"
